✨ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Where do you get all this amazing fabric?
We source our fabrics primarily through deadstock from manufacturers, generous donations from individuals and businesses (you'll find more on that below!), and destashing efforts. Our core mission is to give unused fabric a new life by making it accessible to sewists and makers in our community, fostering sustainability and creativity.
What is the common fiber content of your inventory? (e.g., 100% cotton, linen blends)
We aim to identify all fabric fiber content through burn tests and pattern research. However, since we primarily source vintage and deadstock materials, we can't always guarantee specific content—it's part of the treasure hunt! Currently, we carry a wide variety of fabrics, with larger quantities of fleece, rayon, cotton, spandex, twill, and various specialty knits and apparel fabrics.
What are your current store hours and location?
We recommend checking our website or Instagram for the most up-to-date store hours and location. We also offer flexibility! Feel free to text us, as we may be able to meet you at the store outside of our normal operating hours to accommodate your needs.
Do you carry notions, patterns, and specialized tools?
Absolutely! In addition to a wide variety of fabrics, we carry vintage and contemporary patterns, trim, various notions, a full line of sashiko supplies, and a boutique with vintage sewing supplies, books, and upcycling materials. It's a maker's paradise!
How frequently is new, unique, or vintage inventory added to the shop?
New inventory is added daily! We often post updates and exciting finds on our Instagram and website, so keep an eye out (or come visit us frequently!).
What is your return or exchange policy on fabric and materials?
We want you to love your purchase! Unused fabric and materials may be returned within 1 business day for store credit, accompanied by the original receipt. All items must be in their original, unopened packaging and condition. Please note: all sales are final on opened, cut, or altered items. We reserve the right to refuse returns that do not meet these criteria.

♻️ The Supply Chain & Mission (AKA: Giving Fabric a New Life)
Do you accept donations?
Yes, we gratefully accept donations! Your generosity is vital in helping us fulfill our mission to give unused fabric a new life. By contributing, you support sustainability and creativity, and you help us keep our prices accessible for all sewists and makers. Thank you for helping us rescue those beautiful items from the landfill!
What specific materials do you accept?
We accept donations of unused fabric and trim, uncut patterns, unused or partially used thread, needles, and other notions. Please don't throw away your fabric scraps—bring them to us!
Are there any materials you do not accept?
To ensure everything is ready to go back into use, we cannot accept materials that are soiled, have strong smells (like mothballs or pet odors), or are partially made projects. We also do not accept yarn or cut patterns. Essentially, all donated items need to be in clean, gently used, and ready-to-use condition. However, we gladly accept scraps of any size!
How should I prepare or package my donation for drop-off?
Items for donation should be neatly folded or boxed. If you know the fabric content (that's super helpful!), please include that information. Scraps should be in bags, and please label all bags and boxes clearly with the contents.
Can I receive a tax receipt for my donation?
While we are unable to offer tax receipts for your donation, we are an L3C. This means we are a mission-based organization. Your donation directly helps our mission to rescue fabrics and notions from the landfill and get them back into use, fostering sustainability and creativity in our community.
Do you offer pickup for large volume donations?
Yes! If you have a large fabric donation, we are happy to pick it up. We can help you clean out your sewing stashes, saving you money on junk removal services and saving your sewing stash from the landfill. Please email us with details and photos to arrange this complimentary service.
✂️ Education & Community (AKA: Where the Magic Happens)
How can I find your current workshop schedule and register?
All of our current scheduled workshops are listed on our website and often posted on our Instagram. You can register directly through those platforms!
Are there beginner-friendly workshops? I've never used a sewing machine!
Many of our workshops are beginner-friendly, and many focus on hand-stitching or other construction techniques that do not require a sewing machine. We also offer introductory machine sewing classes for those new to using a sewing machine. Please check the individual workshop descriptions for specific skill level recommendations!
Do I need to bring my own sewing machine and supplies for workshops?
Nope! We provide sewing machines, tools, and materials for all scheduled workshops. If there are any specific supplies you need to bring, it will be clearly noted in the workshop description.
What are the options for using the workshop area?
You can use our fully-equipped workshop area in two ways:
Drop-in & Donation Basis: Our workshop is open for drop-in use. We operate on a donation basis, allowing you to pay what you can to access our space and awesome equipment.
Scheduled Workshops: We host a variety of scheduled classes and events. Please check our website or Instagram for a current schedule.
What cool equipment and supplies are available for drop-in use?
Our workshop is stacked! We have sewing machines, a serger, a binding machine, a grommet press, a Bedazzler (yes, a Bedazzler!), and a button maker. You'll also find an extensive selection of threads, needles, vintage materials for embellishment, fabric scraps for upcycling, a rotary mat and cutter, and many additional supplies for both machine and hand sewing.
Do I need to bring my own materials for drop-in use?
While we provide a wide array of supplies (including fabric scraps, vintage embellishments, threads, and needles), you are absolutely welcome to bring your own materials to work on your projects.
Is there someone available to assist me if I have questions during drop-in hours?
We may have staff present during drop-in hours, but their availability for one-on-one instruction will vary. Our scheduled workshops are designed specifically to provide guided, personalized instruction.
How can I apply or propose to teach a workshop at The Tangled Thread?
We're always looking for talented instructors to share their skills with our community! Please email us with your workshop proposal, including a description of the class, target audience, required materials, and your teaching experience. We'll review your submission and get back to you.
